Norwalk’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Norwalk is actively implementing initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and resilience. The city’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience is dedicated to making Norwalk the greenest city in Connecticut by advancing the goals outlined in the 2024 Sustainability and Resilience Plan. This plan focuses on protecting natural resources, supporting inclusive economic development, and fostering a healthy, equitable community.

In October 2025, Norwalk achieved GOLD Certification and Climate Leader status through Sustainable CT, recognizing the city’s leadership in sustainability. This accomplishment highlights efforts in clean transportation, tree planting, flood resilience, and equitable community engagement.

Urban forestry is a key component of Norwalk’s environmental strategy. The city prioritizes tree planting to enhance parklands, reduce extreme heat, and beautify neighborhoods. Residents can participate by requesting tree plantings in their areas.

Water quality is another focus area. The Norwalk Health Department collaborates with partners to monitor beach water during summer months, ensuring safety for swimming and shellfishing. Additionally, the city manages stormwater runoff to prevent pollution and protect waterways.

Community engagement is vital to these efforts. The annual ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign in April encourages residents to participate in sustainability activities, such as tree plantings, recycling events, and park cleanups.

Through these initiatives, Norwalk demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, aiming to create a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
