Norwalk is actively implementing initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and resilience. The city’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience is dedicated to making Norwalk the greenest city in Connecticut by advancing the goals outlined in the 2024 Sustainability and Resilience Plan. This plan focuses on protecting natural resources, supporting inclusive economic development, and fostering a healthy, equitable community.
In October 2025, Norwalk achieved Gold Certification and Climate Leader status through Sustainable CT, recognizing the city’s leadership in sustainability. This accomplishment highlights efforts in clean transportation, tree planting, flood resilience, and equitable community engagement. Under Mayor Harry Rilling’s leadership, Norwalk has expanded its electric and hybrid vehicle fleet, installed public EV chargers, and increased walkability with new sidewalks and bike lanes.
Community engagement is a cornerstone of Norwalk’s environmental efforts. The annual ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign in April encourages residents to participate in activities like tree plantings, park cleanups, and recycling events. These initiatives aim to connect residents with nature and promote environmental stewardship.
Local organizations play a vital role in these efforts. The Norwalk Tree Alliance focuses on planting native trees and protecting the urban forest, while the Norwalk River Watershed Association works to restore water quality and habitats through volunteer action and educational programs.
Norwalk’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its comprehensive approach, involving city planning, community participation, and collaboration with local organizations to create a resilient and environmentally friendly community.
